How does a person who trusts Christ know they really have salvation? There are three witnesses that will help the new believer find this assurance of salvation.

The first witness is your commitment made to God.

  • You turned away from your sins. (Acts 3:19)
  • You trusted Christ alone for Salvation. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

The second witness is the Word of God.

  • God promises salvation to all who call upon him in faith.
    (Romans 10:9-10)
  • God promises salvation to all who have the Son. (1 John 5:10-13)
  • God promises we will not be judge for our sins. (John 5:24)

The third witness is the work of God in your life.

  • The Spirit of God lives within you. (Romans 8:15-16)
  • God has changed the desires of you heart to serve him.
    (2 Corinthians 5:17; 1 John 2:4-6)

All of us would like to be perfect but none of us are. What happens to a person who has trusted Christ when he or she sins?

Is that proof you are not a child of God? Do you lose your salvation when you sin?

The Bible says “no” to both of these questions.

  • None of us can claim to be without sin. (1 John 1:8)
  • If we confess our sin to Christ he will forgive and cleanse us from all our sin. (1 John 1:9)

Sin in the believer’s life is a fellowship issue not a relationship issue. You became a child of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Nothing will change that. As a child of God you seek to please your Heavenly Father in all you do
(2 Corinthians 5:15). Yet from time to time you will sin. While this will not affect your relationship as a child of God, it will affect your fellowship with the Heavenly Father. To restore fellowship, you must agree with God concerning your sin, turn from it and ask his forgiveness. God promises he will forgive you and cleanse you from every sin. There will be consequences for sin, but you can trust God to forgive.
