R- the “r” stands for reason. The reason Jesus died on the cross was for sin. Jesus was perfect; he even asked the legalistic religious fanatics if they could prove him guilty of sin, but they couldn’t. He didn’t have to pay his own punishment for sin. Instead, he gave his life so that we would not have to pay sin’s punishment. The Bible says, “Christ also suffered when he died for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners that he might bring us safely to God. For we all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” (1 Peter 3:18a, Romans 3:23)

Have you ever sinned? Have you ever lied to a parent or teacher, cheated on a test, stolen something, broken school laws, or done something illegal? How many times have you done something wrong? For most of us, we’ve sinned too many times to count. And no matter how many times you try to be good, you still mess up, right? The Bible teaches that no one is good, despite all our efforts—that we all have a “sin nature.” That’s what the Bible means by “sinner”—even if we try to be good, we still sin.
